What to expect from bunion surgery for bunions

The operation chosen depends on the angle of the bones, joint condition, pain, and activity goals. It may involve removing a prominent part of bone, cutting and repositioning a bone, balancing soft tissues, or fusing a joint when it is damaged. Stitches, a dressing, a special shoe, or temporary fixation may protect the correction while the foot begins to heal.

Arrange help with meals, shopping, and stairs because the foot may need elevation and limited loading at first. Use the surgical shoe, crutches, or walker as directed, keep the dressing dry, and take only the recommended pain medicines. Gentle ankle and toe movement may be prescribed, followed by physiotherapy and a gradual return to ordinary footwear. Do not drive until you can control the vehicle safely and have permission.

Call the surgical team if pain or swelling is steadily worsening, the incision opens, drainage develops, or the dressing becomes soaked. Seek urgent care for a cold, blue, or numb toe; severe calf swelling or pain; chest pain; or sudden breathlessness. A fall that bends the toe or damages the dressing should be reported promptly.

Ask which procedure is recommended and why, whether screws or a fusion are involved, and how much weight you may place on the foot. Discuss bathing, sleeping, work, driving, footwear, physiotherapy, expected swelling, and the plan if the bunion remains painful or begins to return.
