What to expect from breast ultrasound for fibroadenoma

A fibroadenoma is a solid breast lump made from glandular and connective tissue. On ultrasound, it may look smooth, oval, and clearly separated from nearby tissue, although appearances can vary. The scan can measure the area and show whether it is solid or fluid-filled. Imaging helps with assessment but does not always establish the tissue diagnosis. Your clinician interprets the result alongside the examination, changes over time, and any other imaging.

You normally do not need to fast or change medication for this scan. Wear a top that can be removed comfortably and point out the lump before imaging begins. Mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, breast pain, previous surgery, and whether the lump has changed with your menstrual cycle. Depending on its appearance and your history, your clinician may suggest observation with planned review, additional imaging, or a needle biopsy. Ask how the result will reach you and what change should trigger reassessment.

Seek medical assessment for a new lump, a lump that enlarges or becomes fixed, persistent focal pain, nipple discharge, nipple inversion, dimpling, or a change in breast skin. Fever, warmth, spreading redness, or feeling acutely unwell can indicate infection and warrants prompt care. A breast lump can have several causes, so urgency is guided by its features and associated symptoms rather than by the presence of a lump alone.

Ask whether the lump has ultrasound features consistent with fibroadenoma, whether its size or shape has changed, and whether follow-up imaging or biopsy is advised. Clarify what interval is planned, who will explain the report, and which new symptoms should bring you back sooner.
