What to expect from breast ultrasound for duct ectasia

Duct ectasia means a milk duct has become widened and may contain thicker fluid or debris. Ultrasound can show the shape of a duct, whether it is open or filled, and whether a nearby lump is fluid-filled or solid. The sonographer may spend extra time over the area you noticed or where discharge is present. An ultrasound finding does not by itself provide the complete diagnosis; your age, examination, symptoms, and any other breast imaging are considered together.

Usually, no special preparation is needed. Wear clothing that allows the breast to be uncovered easily, and tell the team about nipple discharge, tenderness, skin changes, pregnancy, or previous breast procedures. During the scan, describe the exact site of discomfort or discharge. Ask when and how the result will be explained. If the images show an area needing closer assessment, your clinician may recommend follow-up imaging or a tissue sample; that decision depends on the appearance and your clinical history.

Arrange medical assessment promptly for bloody or persistent nipple discharge, a new or enlarging lump, redness with warmth and worsening pain, fever, nipple inversion, or a skin change that does not settle. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, severe illness, or trouble breathing. These symptoms need assessment because infection and other breast conditions can require treatment; they should not be judged by the ultrasound appointment alone.

Ask which duct or breast area was examined, whether the finding looks like widened ducts or another type of lesion, and whether your discharge changes the follow-up plan. You can also ask when the report will be available and which symptoms should prompt an earlier review.
