What to expect from breast ultrasound for breast cyst

A breast cyst is a fluid-filled space within breast tissue. Ultrasound can help show whether a lump is fluid-filled, solid, or has mixed features. This distinction helps your clinician decide whether observation, repeat imaging, aspiration, or another test is appropriate. A scan describes the area; your symptoms, examination, and other imaging may also be considered. Many cysts change in size or tenderness with hormonal shifts.

Most people can eat and drink normally unless the imaging centre tells them otherwise. Wear a top that is easy to remove from the upper body and bring previous breast imaging if requested. During the scan, you lie down while gel is applied and a probe is moved across the skin. The operator may take extra views of the exact lump or compare both breasts. Ask when the report will be reviewed and whether a follow-up plan is needed.

Arrange prompt review if a lump grows quickly, becomes persistently painful, or is accompanied by redness, warmth, fever, skin dimpling, or new nipple changes. Seek urgent care for severe pain with marked swelling or feeling acutely unwell. A new lump should be assessed even when an earlier cyst has been diagnosed.

Ask whether the lump is a simple fluid-filled cyst, whether it needs drainage or monitoring, what symptoms should trigger reassessment, and when your imaging result will be explained.
