What to expect from breast ultrasound for breast abscess

A breast abscess is a pocket of infected fluid. Ultrasound can show its location, depth, size, and relationship to nearby tissue. It can also help distinguish fluid from a solid area and guide a clinician if drainage or a needle sample is needed. The scan itself does not treat infection and does not replace an examination. Redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, or fever can all affect the clinical decision.

You usually do not need special preparation unless the imaging centre gives different instructions. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the breast and tell the sonographer where pain or swelling is strongest. You lie on your back or turn slightly while gel and a handheld probe are moved over the skin. The pressure can feel tender over an inflamed area. Ask how and when the result will reach the clinician managing your symptoms.

Seek prompt medical care for fever with a hot, red, painful breast, rapidly spreading redness, worsening swelling, or feeling faint or very unwell. Emergency help is needed for confusion, severe weakness, or breathing difficulty. If symptoms continue or worsen after treatment, contact the treating team even if the ultrasound result was reassuring.

Ask whether the scan shows a fluid collection, whether drainage or a sample is needed, what treatment is planned, and which changes should prompt a same-day review.
