What to expect from breast lump excision for intraductal papilloma

An intraductal papilloma is a growth within a milk duct and may cause a lump or nipple discharge. Excision can remove the papilloma when symptoms persist, sampling is not conclusive, or the duct and surrounding tissue need a fuller examination. The surgeon may use imaging or a wire or marker to locate a small area. The specimen goes to a pathologist, whose report helps clarify the diagnosis and whether additional care is needed.

Discuss medicines, allergies, pregnancy, fasting, and transport home with the team. Plan loose clothing and a supportive bra for the journey home. Follow instructions for wound care and bathing. Mild pain, bruising, swelling, altered sensation, or a small amount of discharge can occur as the incision heals. Avoid strenuous movement and heavy lifting until advised. Attend follow-up so the wound and pathology report can be reviewed together.

Report bleeding that continues despite pressure, rapidly increasing swelling, worsening pain, fever, or spreading redness and warmth. A wound that opens or develops cloudy or foul-smelling drainage needs prompt assessment. Seek emergency help for severe breathing problems, chest pain, or collapse after the operation.

Ask whether the duct as well as the papilloma will be removed, how the incision will be placed, what changes in nipple discharge are expected, and when the pathology result and activity guidance will be available.
