What to expect from breast lump excision for fibroadenoma

A fibroadenoma is a solid breast lump that is often non-cancerous. Excision means the surgeon removes the lump, usually through an incision positioned with the breast shape in mind. The removed tissue is sent for laboratory examination. The procedure may be recommended when the lump is growing, uncomfortable, large, difficult to distinguish from surrounding tissue, or when a definite tissue diagnosis is needed. Removing one lump does not prevent other fibroadenomas from developing.

Your surgical team will explain fasting, medicines, transport, and the type of anaesthesia. Arrange help for the first day if you expect to feel drowsy. After surgery, wear the recommended supportive bra and keep the incision dry as instructed. Tenderness, bruising, tightness, and a firm healing ridge can be noticeable. Take only the pain relief approved for you, and avoid lifting or vigorous exercise until your surgeon says it is appropriate. Keep the follow-up appointment to review healing and the tissue report.

Call the surgical team for bleeding that soaks the dressing, increasing swelling, wound separation, fever, worsening pain, or redness and warmth spreading around the incision. Drainage with an unpleasant smell may indicate infection and needs assessment. Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, or a sudden reaction after anaesthesia.

Ask why excision is being recommended, where the incision will be, how the anaesthesia and recovery will work, when normal activity can resume, and when the laboratory result will be discussed.
