What to expect from breast biopsy for intraductal papilloma

An intraductal papilloma is a small growth in a milk duct. It may be associated with a lump or nipple discharge, but a symptom does not by itself establish the diagnosis. During a core biopsy, a hollow needle removes several tissue samples through a small opening. Ultrasound, mammography, or another imaging method may guide the needle to the area of concern. A marker may be left at the site so it can be found on later images.

Tell the clinic about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, pregnancy, and any difficulty lying in position. Wear a comfortable bra to support the dressing afterward. Bruising, tenderness, or mild swelling can occur for a short time; follow the instructions for keeping the area clean and using a cold pack. Avoid strenuous activity for the period your clinician recommends. The pathology result may determine whether monitoring or removal should be discussed.

Contact the clinic if bleeding does not settle with firm pressure, the pain is worsening rather than easing, or the breast becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or produces drainage. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. New or persistent bloody nipple discharge also deserves prompt clinical review.

Ask which biopsy method and imaging guidance will be used, when to expect the pathology result, whether a marker will be placed, and what findings would lead to surgical removal or follow-up imaging.
