What to expect from a breast biopsy for fibroadenoma

A fibroadenoma is a usually benign solid breast lump, but examination and imaging may not provide enough information to identify its nature. A biopsy supplies cells or tissue for laboratory assessment. The clinician may use a needle guided by ultrasound or another imaging method, depending on the lump's position and the information needed.

The breast is cleaned and numbed with local anaesthetic. You may feel pressure or pulling while samples are taken, followed by a small dressing. The tissue is sent for analysis, and the result is discussed with you when available.

Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, pregnancy, and any bleeding problems. Wear a supportive bra if it feels comfortable. Afterward, keep the dressing as directed, use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for swelling, and follow instructions about pain relief.

Bruising, tenderness, or a small amount of swelling can occur. Avoid strenuous activity for the period advised by the clinic. A biopsy result may lead to observation, another imaging check, or treatment discussion depending on the findings and your symptoms.

Contact the clinic if bleeding does not settle with firm pressure, redness and warmth spread around the site, drainage develops, or pain and swelling worsen. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, or breathing difficulty after a medicine or anaesthetic.
