What to expect from a breast biopsy for breast cancer

The team reviews breast imaging and chooses the safest way to sample the area. A core needle biopsy is often performed with local anaesthetic, sometimes using ultrasound, mammography or another imaging method to guide the needle. Several small tissue samples may be taken, and a tiny marker may be left to show the sampled site on later images. Some findings need a surgical biopsy instead, which removes a larger piece of tissue.

A pathologist examines the sample. The report may describe whether cancer is present, the tumour type, and features that help the team plan treatment. Sometimes the sample is insufficient or the result needs correlation with imaging, so another biopsy or additional review may be recommended. A biopsy confirms what the tissue shows; it does not by itself determine the whole treatment plan.

Tell the clinic about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, pregnancy possibility and implanted devices. Ask whether any medicine should be adjusted; never stop a prescribed medicine without instructions. Wear a comfortable top and arrange help if sedation or surgery is planned. Afterward, follow dressing and bathing advice, use a cold pack wrapped in cloth if recommended, and avoid strenuous activity for the period given by the team. Mild bruising, tenderness or swelling can occur.

Call the biopsy team for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing swelling, spreading redness, pus, fever, worsening pain or an allergic reaction. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting or rapidly increasing swelling. A new breast change still needs assessment even if an earlier biopsy was benign, because the clinical and imaging picture may change.

Ask which biopsy method is planned, how imaging will guide it, whether a marker will be placed, when pathology will be ready, who will explain the report, and what care is needed if the sample is inconclusive.
