What to expect from brain tumour surgery for pituitary tumour

Many pituitary tumours can be reached through the nose and a sinus opening, so the surgeon can approach the pituitary area without opening the skull. The route and technique depend on the tumour’s size, position and contact with the optic nerves or nearby blood vessels. The aim may be to remove the tumour, relieve pressure on the visual pathways, or control hormone production. Some tumours need a different surgical route, and the team will explain why.

After the operation, clinicians monitor vision, alertness, headache, nasal drainage, urine output and blood chemistry. The pituitary controls hormones that affect several body systems, so temporary or lasting hormone changes may require tablets or other replacement treatment. Tissue analysis and follow-up scans help determine the next step.

Bring a list of medicines and tell the team about nasal problems, allergies, headaches, vision changes and previous hormone treatment. Plan transport and help at home. Follow instructions about nasal care, bending, lifting, nose blowing and prescribed medicines. Rest, drink as advised and keep every endocrine, eye and surgical appointment. Do not change hormone tablets without guidance, because the correct dose may depend on blood tests and symptoms.

Call the care team urgently for clear watery drainage from the nose, severe or worsening headache, repeated vomiting, marked thirst with very frequent urination, unusual sleepiness, confusion, fever, worsening vision or increasing swelling. Emergency help is needed for collapse, a seizure, severe breathing difficulty or sudden loss of vision. Keep discharge instructions available so symptoms can be described accurately.
