What to expect from brain tumour surgery for brain metastases

The team considers the number, size and position of brain metastases, your symptoms, general health and how the original cancer is being treated. Surgery may be used when a tumour can be reached safely, particularly if swelling or pressure is causing problems. Scans help the team plan the safest route.

After the operation, nurses and doctors check alertness, movement, speech, vision and other neurological functions. A headache, tiredness, nausea or temporary difficulty with concentration may occur. Tissue removed during surgery is examined so the oncology team can coordinate further treatment.

Before admission, discuss steroids, seizure medicines, blood-thinning medicines and the timing of treatment for the original cancer. Arrange transport and help with meals, medicines and appointments. At home, keep the wound clean as directed, take prescribed medicines, rest, and increase activity gradually.

Follow-up may include brain imaging, wound review, oncology appointments, radiotherapy or systemic treatment. Do not drive, work at heights or make medication changes until your clinicians advise that it is appropriate.

Call the surgical team for a worsening headache, repeated vomiting, fever, wound redness or drainage, new weakness, speech or vision changes, confusion or a seizure. Seek emergency care for loss of consciousness, severe breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening neurological symptoms.

Ask what the operation is intended to achieve, which brain functions are near the planned route, how steroids and seizure medicines will be managed, and how surgery fits with your wider cancer treatment.
