What to expect from bone grafting for osteomyelitis

Osteomyelitis can damage bone and the surrounding soft tissue. Surgery may remove infected or dead bone, drain an abscess, and collect samples to guide antimicrobial treatment. A graft may be placed during the same operation or later, depending on infection control, wound condition, and the size of the defect. Temporary spacers, drains, or stabilising hardware may be used while the area heals.

Take antimicrobial medicines for the full course prescribed and keep intravenous access or wound equipment protected if you go home with it. Follow instructions about dressings, limb elevation, weight bearing, and movement. Attend blood-test, wound, imaging, and surgical reviews. Report missed doses, new drainage, or difficulties using equipment early so the team can adjust the plan safely.

Call your clinical team promptly for fever, chills, worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, a wound that opens, or new swelling around the grafted area. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening illness. New numbness, a cold limb, or inability to move the fingers or toes also needs urgent assessment.

Ask how infection control will be checked, which antimicrobial treatment is planned, and whether grafting will be immediate or staged. Clarify weight-bearing limits, wound and line care, likely physiotherapy, follow-up imaging, and the symptoms that should trigger same-day advice.
