What to expect from blood transfusion support for myeloproliferative neoplasms

Myeloproliferative neoplasms change how blood cells are produced and can sometimes lead to a need for supportive blood products. Depending on your results and symptoms, the team may discuss red cells for anaemia or platelets when clotting support is needed. The transfusion is one part of care and does not replace treatment directed at the MPN.

Staff check your identity, blood group and product compatibility before placing or using an intravenous line. They record observations before and during the infusion and watch for changes after it has finished.

Tell the unit about earlier transfusion reactions, allergies, fever, infection symptoms, medicines and pregnancy history. Bring your medication list and ask whether you may eat, drink or take regular medicines as usual. During the infusion, report itching, rash, chills, pain, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness or chest discomfort without delay.

Attend the blood tests arranged after support. Your symptoms and results help the team decide whether another product or a different approach is needed.

Contact your team promptly for fever, shaking chills, a new rash, dark urine, yellow skin, worsening breathlessness or unexpected bleeding after treatment. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, confusion or bleeding that continues after pressure. Follow the emergency plan supplied by your hospital.
