What to expect from a blood test for peripheral neuropathy

Testing may assess blood sugar, vitamin levels, thyroid function, kidney or liver health, and signs of inflammation or other conditions. These checks help the clinician understand why numbness, burning, tingling, or weakness is occurring. A normal result does not exclude nerve damage. The examination, symptom pattern, medicines, medical history, and sometimes nerve conduction testing provide the rest of the assessment.

Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and mention diabetes, alcohol use, digestive problems, recent illness, and the exact areas affected. Ask whether fasting is needed because this depends on the tests ordered. Drink water unless told otherwise. Afterward, press on the puncture site and report unusual bleeding or a large, painful swelling.

Get urgent help if weakness appears suddenly, spreads quickly, affects breathing or swallowing, or comes with severe back pain, loss of bladder or bowel control, confusion, or difficulty speaking. These changes need prompt assessment and should not wait for routine blood-test results.

Ask which causes are being investigated, whether any medicine or supplement could affect the result, and when you will discuss the findings. Ask what examination or nerve testing may follow if the blood tests do not explain your symptoms.
