A healthcare professional takes a small blood sample, commonly from a vein in the arm. The laboratory may measure urate and may check kidney function or inflammation depending on your situation. A high urate result can support a gout assessment, but it does not by itself prove that a painful joint is caused by gout. Urate can also be lower during an acute flare, so a result may need repeating after symptoms settle.

Ask whether you need to fast; many blood tests do not, but preparation depends on the tests ordered. Tell the clinician about gout medicines, diuretics, kidney problems, and recent illness. After the sample, press on the site as instructed and mention persistent bleeding, increasing swelling, or signs of infection. Keep the follow-up appointment so the result can be matched with the joint pattern and timing of attacks.

A suddenly hot, swollen, very painful joint needs medical assessment, particularly if you have fever or feel unwell, because infection can resemble gout. Seek urgent help for severe illness, rapidly spreading redness, or inability to use the limb. Do not wait for a routine blood result if the joint pain is intense or worsening.
