What to expect from blood pressure medication for angina

Angina is chest discomfort caused by the heart muscle not receiving enough oxygen during increased demand. Depending on the medicine, treatment may lower blood pressure, slow the heartbeat, relax blood vessels, or reduce the force of the heart’s pumping. These effects can make exertion easier and reduce episodes, but the medicine does not remove every possible cause of chest pain.

Your clinician may adjust the dose or combine medicines after checking blood pressure, pulse, other conditions, and how often symptoms occur. Dizziness, tiredness, headache, ankle swelling, or a slow heartbeat can occur with some medicines and should be discussed rather than managed by stopping treatment yourself.

Take the medicine at the prescribed times and measure your blood pressure only as your care plan recommends. Rise slowly if you feel light-headed, and record chest discomfort, triggers, duration, and what relieved it. Check before using decongestants, anti-inflammatory painkillers, supplements, or another heart medicine. Do not stop a regular heart or blood pressure medicine suddenly without advice. Keep appointments so your clinician can review symptoms, pulse, blood pressure, and any treatment changes.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain that is severe, new, worsening, occurs at rest, or does not settle with your prescribed action plan. Seek immediate help if it comes with breathlessness, sweating, nausea, fainting, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Contact your clinician promptly for repeated episodes, faintness, very low readings with symptoms, or troublesome swelling or wheezing after starting a medicine.

Ask what each medicine is intended to do, how to respond to a missed dose, what blood pressure or pulse changes matter, and whether you need a separate reliever for sudden angina. Ask which medicines and activities may interfere with your plan.
