What to expect from eyelid surgery for droopy eyelids

Droopy eyelids may reflect excess skin, changes in fat, or a separate eyelid-muscle or brow problem. During consultation, the surgeon examines eyelid position, vision-related symptoms, dry-eye symptoms, brow movement, medicines, and previous eye procedures. This helps decide whether upper, lower, or combined surgery is appropriate.

The surgeon marks incision lines in natural creases where possible. Depending on the plan, excess skin or fat may be adjusted, and the wound is closed with sutures or another method. Swelling, bruising, tightness, watering, and temporary blurred vision can occur during recovery.

Provide a complete list of medicines and supplements, and follow instructions about which ones to pause. Arrange an adult to take you home and help during the early recovery period. Use prescribed drops, ointment, cold compresses, head elevation, and activity restrictions exactly as directed; do not rub the eyes or strain the wounds.

Attend postoperative checks so the surgeon can assess healing, eyelid closure, eye comfort, and symmetry. Protect the area from sun and avoid contact lenses or makeup until your surgeon says they are appropriate. Healing continues after visible bruising improves.

Seek urgent medical advice for sudden vision loss or worsening vision, severe eye pain, rapidly increasing swelling on one side, heavy bleeding, inability to close the eye, or fever with increasing redness and discharge. Do not wait for a routine appointment when an eye symptom changes quickly.

Ask what is causing the droop, which eyelids will be treated, how dry eyes or vision symptoms affect planning, what support you need at home, and which changes require an urgent call.
