What to Expect from a Biopsy for Oral Submucous Fibrosis

Oral submucous fibrosis can cause tight, less flexible tissue, reduced mouth opening and difficulty eating spicy foods. A clinician may examine the lining, measure how widely you can open your mouth and feel areas of firmness. The sample helps assess the scar-like changes and check for abnormal cells in an area that looks different, remains sore or has an ulcer.

Share your history of areca or betel-quid use, tobacco, mouth irritation, previous procedures and medicines that affect bleeding. Your team may plan the sample around limited mouth opening.

The clinician numbs the area before removing a small sample; a stitch can be needed. Follow eating, rinsing and medication instructions. Use soft foods while chewing is uncomfortable, keep the mouth clean with the recommended method, and avoid areca products, tobacco and alcohol during healing. Do not force the mouth open if the wound is tender; ask about the exercises or treatment that are appropriate for your fibrosis.

Contact the team for bleeding that does not stop with pressure, worsening swelling, fever, pus, a loose stitch or pain that is becoming more severe. Seek urgent care if swelling makes breathing or swallowing difficult, or if you cannot keep fluids down.
