What to Expect from a Biopsy for a Lung Nodule

A scan can show a nodule's size, shape and position, but tissue can provide a closer answer. The team chooses the route based on where the nodule sits, its relationship to airways and blood vessels, your breathing, and earlier scans. A result may identify a benign change, infection, inflammation or cancerous cells; sometimes the sample is insufficient and another test is discussed.

Before the procedure, imaging is reviewed and medicines such as blood thinners are checked. You may need to avoid food or drink for a specified period and arrange transport if sedation is used.

Follow the clinic's instructions about medicines, fasting and activity. During a needle biopsy, local anaesthetic numbs the skin and you remain still while images guide the needle. A bronchoscopy passes a flexible camera through the nose or mouth, usually with sedation or anaesthetic. Afterward, observation checks breathing and other vital signs. Mild soreness or coughing can occur; use only the pain relief recommended for you and keep the dressing clean if one is present.

Contact the clinical team promptly for increasing chest pain, fever, worsening breathlessness, coughing that does not settle, or bleeding from the biopsy site. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, blue lips, or heavy coughing of blood.

Ask which biopsy route is planned, whether sedation is needed, when normal medicines can restart, how results will be shared, and what happens if the sample does not answer the question.
