What to expect from autologous stem cell transplant for Hodgkin lymphoma

Before transplant, medicines help release blood-forming stem cells into the bloodstream. They are collected through a vein or catheter and stored. You then receive conditioning treatment to treat Hodgkin lymphoma and make space for the collected cells. The cells are returned through the catheter, much like an infusion.

During the period before the new cells establish blood production, low blood counts can increase infection, bleeding, and anaemia concerns. Nausea, mouth soreness, diarrhoea, appetite changes, hair loss, and profound tiredness may occur. The transplant team checks blood tests and provides fluids, anti-sickness treatment, transfusion support, and infection prevention when needed.

Arrange a reliable adult support person, transport, and a clean place to rest after discharge. Follow food, hand-washing, catheter, and visitor instructions from the transplant unit. Sip fluids as advised, use prescribed mouth care, and take medicines on schedule. Gentle movement can help maintain strength, but rest when your body requires it.

Keep a thermometer and the transplant team’s contact details available. Avoid crowds and people who are unwell during the vulnerable recovery period. Do not take over-the-counter medicines, herbal products, or vaccines without checking first.

Call the transplant unit immediately for a fever at or above the threshold they gave you, chills, new cough, sore throat, burning urine, repeated vomiting, uncontrolled diarrhoea, bleeding, or inability to drink. Get emergency help for severe breathing trouble, chest pain, confusion, seizure, or sudden weakness. Catheter redness, swelling, drainage, or pain also needs prompt advice.

Ask how cells will be collected, what conditioning treatment involves, how long close monitoring may last, and which symptoms require an immediate call. Ask when you may return to work, exercise, social activities, travel, and routine vaccinations.
