What to expect from artificial disc replacement for cervical radiculopathy

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a nerve near the neck is irritated or compressed, sometimes causing pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness into the arm. During artificial disc replacement, the surgeon removes the problematic disc and places an implant designed to maintain space and controlled motion. The operation is not suitable for every neck problem; bone health, alignment, instability, arthritis, and the source of nerve pressure all matter. Arm pain may improve on a different timetable from neck discomfort, and recovery is individual.

Before surgery, discuss imaging findings, alternative treatments, implant choice, activity limits, and the expected rehabilitation plan. Share your medicines, smoking or nicotine use, allergies, and any swallowing or voice problems. Afterward, follow wound and movement instructions, walk as advised, and attend follow-up appointments. Do not restart driving, lifting, or strenuous exercise until your surgical team confirms that your movement, strength, and medication use make those activities appropriate.

Contact the surgical team urgently for increasing arm or leg weakness, new difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe neck pain after a fall, fever with wound redness or drainage, or difficulty breathing. New or worsening swallowing trouble, persistent voice change, or rapidly increasing neck swelling also needs prompt assessment.
