What to expect from antiviral treatment for eczema herpeticum

Eczema herpeticum is a herpes infection that enters areas affected by eczema or another skin-barrier problem. It can cause clusters of painful, similar-looking blisters or punched-out sores, sometimes with fever or a generally unwell feeling. A clinician may prescribe an antiviral promptly, often as tablets; severe illness or involvement of sensitive areas can require treatment through a vein and hospital monitoring.

The antiviral limits viral replication, but damaged skin may need additional care and the rash will not vanish instantly. Bacterial infection can occur on top of the viral infection, so worsening pain, pus, or fever should be reported rather than treated at home with leftover antibiotics.

Contact a medical service urgently if eczema skin develops rapidly spreading painful blisters or sores. Take the antiviral exactly as prescribed, do not pick lesions, and wash hands after touching the area. Keep towels, bedding, razors, and clothing separate until you receive advice. Avoid close skin contact with babies, people with eczema, and anyone with a weakened immune system.

Use eczema creams or dressings only as directed for this episode. Tell the clinician about medicines, allergies, pregnancy, kidney problems, and any eye symptoms so the plan can be adjusted safely.

Seek emergency care for eye pain, blurred vision, light sensitivity, facial swelling, confusion, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, inability to drink, or rapidly worsening lesions. Fever with extensive sores also warrants urgent assessment. Do not wait for a routine eczema appointment when the rash is painful, blistering, and spreading.

Ask whether you need oral or intravenous treatment, how the affected skin should be dressed, when eczema treatment can resume, and how to reduce transmission at home. Confirm the follow-up plan and which changes mean you should return immediately.
