Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus and often begin with tingling, burning, or itching before small blisters appear around the lip. A clinician may suggest treatment for frequent, severe, prolonged, or particularly troublesome recurrences, with the choice depending on your symptoms and health.

The sore can still pass through blistering, crusting, and healing after treatment starts. Antivirals do not remove the virus from the body, so later episodes can occur. Avoid sharing medicine, lip products, cups, towels, or kissing while a sore is active.

Start the prescribed treatment when instructed and apply cream only to the affected area with clean hands. Wash hands before and after touching the sore, keep it clean, and avoid picking the crust. Use simple measures such as cool fluids or a suitable pain reliever if advised for you. Take extra care around newborn babies and people with weakened immunity.

If a product irritates the skin, the sore spreads, or episodes keep returning, contact the prescriber rather than adding several treatments at once. Lip products used during an episode may need replacing to reduce re-exposure.

Seek prompt advice if the sore is near the eye, eye pain or light sensitivity develops, lesions spread widely, swallowing or drinking becomes difficult, or you feel significantly unwell. Arrange a review for a sore that does not heal as expected, frequent episodes, or sores in someone with a weakened immune system.
