What to expect from antifungal treatment for thrush for nipple thrush

Nipple thrush can cause burning or stinging pain during or after feeds, shiny or flaky nipple skin, itching, or soreness that seems out of proportion to what you can see. Similar symptoms can come from a shallow latch, dermatitis, blocked ducts, or bacterial infection, so assessment matters before treatment.

A clinician may recommend a topical antifungal, an oral medicine, or both. If a baby has signs of oral thrush, the baby may need assessment and treatment too. Symptoms should be monitored rather than judged by appearance alone.

Use the medicine exactly as directed and keep the nipple area clean and dry. Wash hands before and after applying treatment, change breast pads when damp, and wash items that contact milk or the baby according to your clinician’s advice.

Breastfeeding can often continue, but ask specifically whether the product is safe during feeding and whether it should be removed before the next feed. Do not put a baby’s medicine on your own skin or use an over-the-counter product without checking.

Arrange review if pain is worsening, feeding becomes difficult, the breast is hot and swollen, you develop fever, or symptoms do not begin to improve with the prescribed plan. These features may point to mastitis or another condition.

Seek urgent help for severe illness, rapidly spreading redness, fainting, or breathing difficulty after a medicine. Ask for prompt assessment if the baby is feeding poorly, unusually sleepy, or has difficulty swallowing.
