What to Expect From Antibiotic Treatment for Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis can have different causes. Antibiotics target certain bacterial infections, but they do not treat viral tonsillitis. A clinician may assess your throat and symptoms before deciding whether an antibiotic is suitable.

A sore throat, swollen tonsils, fever, and tender neck glands may not disappear immediately. Improvement should be gradual rather than instant. You may still need rest, fluids, and simple pain or fever relief that is appropriate for you.

Possible unwanted effects include nausea, loose stools, stomach discomfort, or a rash. A new rash, swelling of the lips or face, wheezing, or trouble breathing can signal an allergic reaction and needs urgent help.

Follow the label for the dose, timing, and whether the medicine should be taken with food. Finish the prescribed course unless the prescriber tells you to stop. Do not share leftover antibiotics, save them for another illness, or use someone else’s medicine.

Drink enough fluid to keep your mouth moist and your urine reasonably pale, choose soft foods if swallowing hurts, and avoid smoking or other throat irritants. If you miss a dose, check the medicine instructions or ask a pharmacist rather than doubling the next dose.

Stay home from close contact while you have a fever or feel unwell. Ask the prescriber when you can return to school or work, especially if the illness was confirmed as bacterial.

Get urgent help if you have trouble breathing, cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, develop rapidly increasing swelling in the throat or neck, or cannot keep fluids down. These symptoms can indicate a serious complication or dehydration.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are worsening, fever persists, you develop a one-sided throat swelling or muffled voice, or you are not starting to improve after taking the antibiotic as prescribed. Ask for advice promptly if you have a weakened immune system or a significant long-term illness.
