What to expect from antibiotic treatment for sepsis

Sepsis is a serious reaction to an infection that can affect the whole body. Clinicians may begin broad antibiotic cover before test results show the exact germ. Treatment can be given through a vein so it reaches the bloodstream promptly. Blood, urine, sputum, or other samples may help identify the source, and the medicine may be changed when results and your clinical response provide more direction.

Antibiotics are only one part of care. The team may also give fluids, oxygen, medicines to support blood pressure, or treatment to drain an infected collection. Improvement is assessed through symptoms, examination, vital signs, and laboratory monitoring.

Tell the clinical team about medicine allergies, recent antibiotics, kidney problems, and any regular medicines. Take or receive each dose exactly as prescribed; do not stop treatment because you feel better unless the treating clinician changes the plan. Report new rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, severe diarrhoea, or pain around an intravenous line. Ask what infection source is being treated and how follow-up will be arranged after discharge.

Sepsis needs emergency assessment. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, very little urine, rapidly worsening weakness, or skin that feels unusually cold or mottled. After starting antibiotics, urgent review is also needed if fever or shaking worsens, you cannot keep fluids down, or you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction.
