What to expect from antibiotic treatment for scarlet fever

Scarlet fever is associated with a streptococcal throat infection. A clinician chooses an antibiotic after considering examination findings, testing, allergies, age, and other health factors. Sore throat and fever often improve as the infection responds, but the rough rash can take longer to fade, and skin peeling may occur during recovery.

Antibiotics do not remove every symptom immediately. Fluids, rest, and suitable fever relief can make swallowing and general discomfort easier. Children may be more tired than usual, so watch drinking, urination, alertness, and breathing as well as the rash.

Emergency help is needed for facial swelling, wheezing, or breathing difficulty after an antibiotic. Arrange medical review if fever persists, returns, or the child is becoming less alert.
