What to expect from antibiotic treatment for middle ear infection

Middle ear infections can cause earache, reduced hearing, fever, irritability, or disturbed sleep. Antibiotics are not needed for every case, because some infections improve with observation and symptom relief. When prescribed, the medicine is chosen for the child's or adult's age, allergies, symptoms, and examination. Fluid behind the eardrum can leave muffled hearing after pain improves, so recovery is not judged by pain alone.

Give or take each dose at the stated time and finish the course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Use age-appropriate pain relief only as directed. Do not put oil, cotton buds, or unprescribed drops into the ear, especially if discharge is present. Keep the ear dry if advised. A child who is taking fluids, sleeping more comfortably, and becoming more alert is showing useful signs of improvement.

Seek urgent care for swelling or redness behind the ear, an ear that is pushed outward, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, facial weakness, or trouble breathing. Contact a clinician promptly for worsening pain, persistent fever, new dizziness, repeated vomiting, or fluid or blood draining from the ear. An allergic reaction with facial swelling or breathing difficulty needs emergency help.

Ask whether antibiotics are needed, how to measure a child's dose, which pain relief is suitable, and when hearing or the eardrum should be checked. Mention previous reactions and any ear tubes or surgery.
