What to expect from antibiotic treatment for diphtheria

Diphtheria can produce a thick coating in the throat or nose and release toxin that harms tissues. Antibiotics help stop the bacteria from producing more toxin and reduce spread, but they cannot instantly reverse tissue injury. Hospital care may be needed for observation, breathing support, and treatment directed at toxin effects. Clinicians may also check the heart and nerves because problems can appear during recovery.

Take or receive every prescribed dose and follow infection-control instructions from the medical team. Avoid close contact until clinicians confirm that you are no longer infectious. Household and close contacts may need assessment, preventive treatment, or testing. Do not scrape a throat coating or delay care while waiting for symptoms to settle. Keep follow-up appointments and discuss vaccination because illness does not replace routine protection.

Diphtheria is an urgent condition. Seek emergency help for noisy or difficult breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck swelling, blue lips, fainting, chest pain, or new weakness. During recovery, report palpitations, unusual tiredness, tingling, or difficulty walking promptly.
