What to Expect from Anti-Inflammatory Medication for Olecranon Bursitis

Olecranon bursitis affects the fluid-filled cushion over the point of the elbow. Repeated leaning, a knock, inflammatory arthritis, or infection can contribute. Medication may calm irritation from non-infectious bursitis and make bending easier. A medicine that reduces discomfort cannot confirm the cause, and infection may need different treatment after an examination.

Use medication only according to professional or label directions. Avoid leaning on the elbow, use padding for everyday pressure, and keep comfortable movement rather than repeatedly rubbing the swelling. Tell a clinician about ulcers, kidney or heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma reactions, pregnancy, and other medicines. Do not share tablets or combine anti-inflammatory products without advice. A clinician may need to assess a persistent lump or consider fluid testing.

Arrange prompt assessment if the elbow becomes hot, red, rapidly more swollen, or increasingly tender, especially with fever, chills, or feeling unwell. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, vomiting blood, black stools, severe chest pain, or very little urine. A wound, bite, or puncture near the swelling also warrants medical advice.
