Gout is inflammation around a joint caused by urate crystal deposits. Anti-inflammatory treatment targets the inflammation behind sudden pain, warmth, swelling, and tenderness. It is usually used to manage a flare rather than remove the urate deposits immediately. A clinician may consider an anti-inflammatory medicine, colchicine, or a steroid approach depending on kidney function, stomach health, cardiovascular history, and other medicines. Improvement can take time, and the joint may remain sensitive after the strongest pain has eased.

Use the medicine exactly as directed and avoid taking more than one anti-inflammatory product unless your clinician confirms the combination. Rest the affected joint, keep it raised when practical, and drink fluids unless you have been told to restrict them. Tell the prescriber about kidney disease, ulcers, blood thinners, diuretics, pregnancy, or previous reactions. Get urgent help for fever with a hot, swollen joint, feeling severely unwell, or rapidly spreading redness, because an infection can resemble a gout flare. Seek prompt advice for black stools, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain, marked weakness, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a widespread rash after medicine.
