What to expect from anti-inflammatory medication for cervical radiculopathy

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a nerve root in the neck is irritated or compressed. Reducing inflammation can make neck pain, shoulder discomfort, or pain travelling into the arm easier to manage. Relief may be partial, and the medicine does not directly correct narrowing, a disc problem, or muscle weakness. Your clinician may choose a tablet, topical option, or another approach according to your symptoms, medical history, and other medicines.

Follow the prescribed dose and timing, and do not combine anti-inflammatory products unless a clinician or pharmacist says it is appropriate. Tell them about stomach ulcers, kidney disease, heart problems, high blood pressure, asthma triggered by pain medicines, pregnancy, and medicines that affect bleeding. Taking a prescribed oral medicine with food may reduce stomach irritation, but it does not remove all risks. Keep gentle movement within comfort and note changes in arm strength, sensation, and pain.

Seek urgent medical assessment for new or worsening arm or hand weakness, loss of coordination, trouble walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Contact a clinician promptly for black stools, vomiting blood, severe stomach pain, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread rash after taking the medicine. Arrange review if pain is worsening or does not settle as expected.
