What to Expect from Anaphylaxis Emergency Treatment for Food Allergy

Anaphylaxis is a rapidly developing allergic reaction that can affect breathing, blood pressure, the skin, or the digestive system. Emergency clinicians assess the airway, breathing, circulation, symptoms, and response to treatment. Adrenaline is given promptly, usually into the outer thigh. Oxygen, fluids through a vein, or additional medicines may be used when the reaction affects breathing or circulation. A second adrenaline dose can be considered if symptoms persist or return. The emergency team may keep you under observation because symptoms can recur after initial improvement.

Use an adrenaline auto-injector immediately if one has been prescribed and anaphylaxis is suspected. Call emergency services, explain that anaphylaxis is possible, and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Lie down with legs raised if breathing is comfortable; sit up only if lying down worsens breathing, and avoid standing or walking. If the person is unconscious and not breathing normally, begin resuscitation if trained. Do not rely on an antihistamine or inhaler instead of adrenaline for a severe reaction.

Treat sudden breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, collapse, widespread hives with other symptoms, or repeated vomiting after eating as an emergency. Seek emergency care even if adrenaline improves the symptoms, because the reaction may return. Anyone treated for suspected anaphylaxis should receive follow-up advice about allergy assessment, an emergency action plan, and access to prescribed adrenaline.
