What to Expect from Allergy Testing for Anaphylaxis

The clinician will reconstruct what happened: the food, medicine, sting, or other exposure; how quickly symptoms appeared; which body systems were affected; and what emergency treatment was given. Skin or blood testing may look for IgE sensitisation to a suspected allergen. A result is interpreted alongside the episode because a positive test can indicate sensitisation without proving it caused that reaction, while a negative result may need specialist interpretation.

Take the referral details and a complete medicine list, including emergency medicines. Ask the allergy team whether antihistamines or other medicines need adjustment; never make a change without their direction. Until the trigger is clarified, follow the avoidance and emergency plan given to you. Keep a record of suspected exposures and reactions, including labels or photographs when relevant.

Do not wait for allergy testing during a new reaction. Sudden breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, wheezing, faintness, or symptoms affecting several body systems require emergency action according to your prescribed plan and immediate emergency services. Testing is for investigation after recovery, not treatment of an active reaction.
