What to Expect from Allergy Testing for Allergic Rhinitis

A clinician may use skin-prick testing or a blood test to look for sensitivity to substances such as pollen, house-dust mites, mould, or animal dander. A positive result shows sensitisation; it must be matched with the timing and pattern of your sneezing, blocked nose, itching, or watery eyes. Testing does not by itself prove that every positive trigger causes symptoms.

Bring a list of medicines, nasal sprays, supplements, and the situations that bring on symptoms. Some antihistamines can affect skin testing, so ask the clinic whether any medicine should be paused and how to do that safely. Do not stop prescribed treatment without instructions. After the result, your clinician may discuss trigger reduction, symptom treatment, or whether specialist follow-up is useful.

Arrange medical review if nasal symptoms persist, disturb sleep, or interfere with work despite treatment, especially when the trigger is unclear. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives; these symptoms can signal a severe allergic reaction and are not a reason to wait for routine testing.
