What to expect from acid reflux medication for peptic ulcer

A peptic ulcer is an open sore in the stomach or upper small intestine. Lowering acid can reduce chemical irritation and give the sore a chance to heal. If an infection or regular anti-inflammatory pain medicine contributed, acid control alone may not address the problem. Pain can settle before healing is complete, so follow the planned course even when you feel better.

Take the medicine exactly as directed and discuss all painkillers, steroids, supplements, and other prescriptions with your clinician. Avoid self-treating persistent pain with additional anti-inflammatory medicines. Ask what food or drink triggers to limit for you, and keep follow-up appointments if a repeat assessment is planned. Report side effects rather than silently stopping a treatment that was prescribed to protect the ulcer.

Go to urgent care for vomiting blood or material that resembles coffee grounds, black stools, sudden severe abdominal pain, fainting, or unusual weakness. Seek prompt review for ongoing vomiting, worsening pain, difficulty swallowing, or symptoms that return after treatment. Bleeding from an ulcer can be serious even if discomfort has been mild.
