What to expect from abscess drainage for paronychia

Paronychia is inflammation or infection of the skin fold beside a fingernail or toenail. When pus collects there, a clinician examines the nail fold and the fingertip before choosing drainage. The skin is cleaned and numbed; a small opening may be made at the edge of the nail fold so the collection can escape. The clinician checks whether infection extends beneath the nail or into the fingertip, because that changes the care needed. A small dressing then shields the tender area.

Keep the dressing clean and dry as instructed, and wash your hands before changing it. Protect the finger or toe from pressure, biting, picking, and repeated water or chemical exposure. Do not cut deeply into the nail fold or try to puncture a new swelling. Use any recommended soaks or medication exactly as directed, and keep the follow-up visit if the nail edge or fingertip needs inspection. A slowly growing nail may look irregular while the inflamed fold recovers.

Contact a clinician promptly if swelling or pus returns, pain spreads into the fingertip, redness travels up the finger or toe, or movement becomes difficult. Seek urgent help for fever, chills, severe throbbing pain, numbness, blue or pale skin, or rapidly increasing swelling. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity should seek early advice for nail-fold infections.

Ask whether the abscess reaches under the nail, how long the dressing should stay on, whether the digit should be elevated, and when normal hand or foot use is safe. Ask what changes mean the infection is spreading.
