What to expect from an abdominal ultrasound for pancreatitis

You lie on a couch while the sonographer scans the upper abdomen. You may need to turn or hold your breath briefly. Gas in the bowel can limit the view of the pancreas, so the examination may focus on related organs as well.

Ultrasound may show gallstones or bile-duct changes that help identify a possible trigger for pancreatitis. It can also examine nearby organs, but it may not show the whole pancreas clearly and cannot alone grade every episode.

The diagnosis is based on the whole clinical picture, including upper abdominal pain, vomiting, examination findings, and blood-test results. Your team decides whether further imaging or hospital observation is needed.

Follow instructions about fasting, drinking water, and regular medicines. Tell the imaging team about severe pain, vomiting, diabetes medicines, or difficulty lying still so the appointment can be handled safely.

Ask how quickly the result will be discussed. Do not use a routine scan appointment to delay assessment of new or worsening symptoms; pancreatitis can require prompt medical treatment and monitoring.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, pain spreading to the back, repeated vomiting, fever, fainting, confusion, yellow skin or eyes, or inability to keep fluids down. These symptoms need clinical assessment rather than waiting for an imaging report.

Ask whether the scan found gallstones or bile-duct changes, which blood tests matter, whether you need further imaging, and what warning symptoms should take you to urgent care.
