What to expect from an abdominal ultrasound for fatty liver disease

A sonographer usually asks you to lie on your back or side, expose the upper abdomen, and hold your breath briefly while images are captured. The examination uses sound waves rather than radiation and commonly takes a short appointment.

The scan can show the liver's size, outline, and appearance, including changes that may fit with fatty liver. It can also give information about the gallbladder and bile ducts, which helps place liver findings in context.

Ultrasound cannot by itself describe every aspect of liver health or determine the exact cause of an abnormal appearance. Your clinician may combine the report with symptoms, examination findings, blood tests, and sometimes another type of assessment.

Follow the imaging centre's fasting instructions carefully; they may ask you not to eat for several hours, while allowing specified medicines or small amounts of water. Wear clothing that allows the upper abdomen to be reached and tell staff if you are pregnant or have difficulty lying flat.

Afterward, you can normally return to your usual routine unless your care team gives different advice. Arrange a review so someone explains the report and connects it with liver tests, alcohol intake, medicines, weight, and other health factors.

An ultrasound appointment is not a substitute for urgent assessment. Seek prompt medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, or unusual bleeding.

Ask what the report says about the liver, whether blood tests are needed, and which changes would prompt another assessment. You can also ask how medicines, alcohol, food choices, activity, and other conditions may affect your liver plan.
