Short answer

Change position, rest, drink water, and monitor the pattern; seek maternity advice if contractions become regular, painful, or occur with warning signs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What Braxton Hicks contractions mean

Braxton Hicks contractions are tightening episodes caused by the womb’s muscles. They may feel like the abdomen is firming and then relaxing. Practice contractions often remain irregular, do not steadily build in strength, and may settle after rest, hydration, or a change in activity. They can become more noticeable later in pregnancy, but a new or changing pattern deserves attention because early labour can feel similar.

Comfort measures

Pause strenuous activity and lie on your side or sit comfortably. Sip water and empty your bladder. Gentle movement or a warm—not hot—shower may help if your maternity team has said these are suitable for you. Note when each tightening starts, how long it lasts, and whether the gaps are shortening. Avoid taking medicine or using heat on your abdomen unless your clinician has advised it.

When to contact your maternity team

Call promptly if tightenings become regular, increasingly painful, or continue despite rest and fluids. Seek urgent advice for vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking, severe or constant abdominal pain, fever, reduced baby movements, or pressure in the pelvis or lower back. If these symptoms happen before your expected delivery time, ask for assessment for [Preterm Labour](/conditions/preterm-labour/). When unsure, call your maternity unit rather than waiting for the pattern to become clear.

Questions for your doctor or midwife

Ask how your team defines a regular contraction pattern, which pain relief is appropriate for you, and when to come to the maternity unit. You can also ask whether your activity level, hydration, or pregnancy history changes the advice.

Questions people ask

Can Braxton Hicks contractions be painful?

They can feel uncomfortable or mildly painful, but they should not keep becoming stronger and closer together. A worsening pattern should be discussed with your maternity team.

Should I time practice contractions?

Yes. Timing helps show whether episodes are irregular or developing a consistent pattern, especially when other symptoms are present.
