What Is Wound Care and Dressing Done With?

A sterile wound dressing covers the wound while helping manage fluid, reduce friction, and protect healing tissue from contact with dirt. Different dressings vary in absorbency, stickiness, softness, and ability to maintain a moist healing environment.

Care may include hand hygiene, gentle cleansing, examination of the wound, control of bleeding, and securing a fresh dressing. The choice changes with wound size, depth, contamination, skin condition, and whether there are stitches or another closure.

Keep the dressing clean and dry unless the treating clinician gave different instructions. Wash your hands before and after touching it, avoid pulling off a dressing that is stuck, and do not apply antiseptics, creams, or household materials unless advised.

Change the dressing on the schedule provided. Protect the area from rubbing and soaking, and watch for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, or worsening pain. People with diabetes or poor circulation may need a tailored plan.

Get urgent help if bleeding does not settle with firm pressure, the wound becomes widely open, tissue is visible, or you lose movement or feeling nearby. Prompt review is also needed for spreading redness, pus, fever, worsening pain, or a bad smell.

Ask which dressing to use, how often to change it, whether showering is allowed, what activity to avoid, and which changes mean the wound needs an examination.
