What Is Whole-Body Cryotherapy Done With?

A chamber is designed to expose the skin to cold air for a brief, controlled session. Depending on its design, the head may remain outside while the rest of the body is enclosed, or you may stand inside a larger room. Staff explain how to enter, where to stand and how to communicate during the session. Cold exposure is not the same as placing ice directly on an injured area.

Tell the provider about circulation problems, cold sensitivity, skin conditions, heart or lung conditions, pregnancy, medication and any recent illness. Follow instructions about dry skin, clothing and protective items for areas such as hands and feet. Remove damp clothing or jewellery if asked. Stop and tell staff immediately if you feel faint, develop intense burning or pain, or notice unusual skin changes.

After treatment, seek medical advice for persistent numbness, blistering, severe pain, marked skin discolouration, dizziness that does not settle or breathing difficulty. Emergency care is appropriate for chest pain, collapse or serious breathing symptoms. A cold chamber should not delay assessment of an injury or illness requiring medical treatment.
