What is vitrification used for?

Vitrification cools reproductive cells or embryos very quickly after they are prepared with protective solutions. This changes the material into a glass-like state and limits the formation of damaging ice crystals. The frozen material is stored under controlled laboratory conditions until a fertility team considers thawing it for treatment.

Ask the fertility team which material is being stored, how it will be labelled and monitored, and how long storage may continue under the clinic’s policy. Discuss whether eggs, embryos, or sperm best fits your circumstances, as well as consent, future use, and what happens during thawing. Preservation stores reproductive material; it does not itself create a pregnancy.

If you are undergoing egg collection or another fertility procedure, contact the clinic for severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, fainting, or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling. These symptoms can require urgent assessment after stimulation or a procedure.
