What is a trichoscope used for?

The device uses magnification and lighting to show details that are difficult to see during an ordinary scalp examination. A clinician may inspect hair shaft shape, follicle openings, scaling, redness, broken hairs and differences in density across selected areas.

Images can help compare regions and track change during a treatment plan. Trichoscopy supports clinical assessment; it does not by itself provide a final diagnosis or replace a history, examination or other tests when those are needed.

Ask the clinic whether you should arrive with the scalp clean and free of fibres, oils, sprays or concealing powders. Mention recent colouring, hair treatments, scalp products, shedding, itching, pain and any medicines. Bring a list of when the concern began and whether it is changing.

During the examination, keep still while images are taken from several scalp areas. The clinician may compare affected and unaffected regions and explain whether further evaluation is appropriate.

Arrange a clinical review for sudden or patchy hair loss, scalp pain, marked redness, pus, heavy scale, bleeding or a rapidly changing scalp mark. Seek urgent help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty. A trichoscope can document findings, but a concerning change still needs timely medical assessment.

Ask what the images show, which findings support the working diagnosis, whether photographs will be compared later, and whether blood tests, a scalp examination or biopsy is needed.
