What is the meaning of Braxton Hicks contractions?

A tightening can make the abdomen feel firm and then soften. Braxton Hicks contractions often remain irregular, do not build in a steady pattern and may ease after rest, changing position, drinking fluids or emptying the bladder. They can be uncomfortable, particularly later in pregnancy, without causing the progressive cervical changes associated with established labour.

It is not always possible to tell the difference from symptoms alone, especially if the tightenings are new or becoming stronger. Pregnancy stage, pain, fluid loss, bleeding and fetal movement all matter when deciding whether to call the maternity team.

Pause, rest on your side if comfortable, drink fluids and notice whether the tightenings settle. Record when they begin, how long they last and whether the pattern changes. Contact your maternity unit for advice if you are unsure, particularly when you are not yet near your expected delivery period or the contractions continue despite rest.

Contact your maternity team promptly for regular or painful tightenings, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, new pelvic pressure, persistent backache or reduced fetal movement. These signs can indicate labour or another concern, including preterm labour, and need individual assessment. Seek emergency help for severe pain, heavy bleeding or feeling faint.
