What is the first treatment for vaginal cancer?

Radiotherapy uses focused radiation to damage cancer cells in the treated area. Brachytherapy places a radiation source inside or close to the vagina for a planned treatment session. External radiotherapy directs radiation from a machine outside the body. Some people receive one approach, while others receive both.

The choice depends on the tumour’s position, size, depth and relationship to nearby organs. Imaging and examination help the team map the treatment area and protect healthy tissue as far as possible.

Ask whether the plan uses external radiotherapy, brachytherapy or a combination, and how the team will position you. Discuss possible skin changes, tiredness, bowel or bladder symptoms, vaginal discomfort and changes to sexual health. Tell the team about pregnancy possibility, previous pelvic treatment and regular medicines.

Keep the treatment appointments and report new symptoms early. Your team can offer practical help for skin care, hydration, bowel changes and emotional support. Treatment planning may be adjusted if examinations or scans show a different extent of disease.

Contact your treatment team urgently for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fever, inability to pass urine, or sudden weakness. New shortness of breath or chest pain also needs emergency assessment.
