What Is the First Treatment for Tinea Versicolor?

Tinea versicolor is an overgrowth of a yeast that normally lives on the skin. It can produce lighter, darker, or pinkish patches with fine scale, commonly on the chest, back, shoulders, or neck. A topical antifungal treats the yeast on the skin surface. The scale and active infection may settle before the skin colour returns to its usual tone, so a lingering colour difference does not necessarily mean treatment has failed.

Use the prescribed cream, lotion, wash, or shampoo exactly as directed, including the recommended contact time and treatment area. Keep the skin dry after bathing and avoid sharing towels or clothing. Do not scrub the patches aggressively, because irritation can make contrast more visible.
