What is the first treatment for thymoma?

A thymoma develops in the thymus, which sits behind the breastbone in the chest. Scans help show its size, position and relationship to nearby structures. When an operation is feasible, surgery removes the thymoma and may include nearby tissue if needed. Radiotherapy can be considered after surgery when there is concern about local return, or as part of treatment when surgery cannot remove all disease. The final plan is made by a specialist team after imaging and pathology are reviewed.

Bring scan reports and a complete medicine list to the appointment. Tell the team about chest pressure, breathlessness, swallowing difficulty or symptoms of myasthenia gravis such as drooping eyelids, weakness or tiring while chewing. Ask how the operation may affect recovery, whether the tumour touches nearby organs and whether radiotherapy could be needed afterward. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.

Seek urgent help for sudden or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, difficulty swallowing saliva or rapidly increasing weakness. After surgery, report fever, wound redness, severe pain, new breathing problems or heavy bleeding promptly.
