What is the first treatment tried for small cell lung cancer?

Chemotherapy uses medicines carried in the bloodstream, so it can reach cancer cells in the lung and elsewhere in the body. Immunotherapy may be paired with chemotherapy to help the immune system recognise and respond to cancer cells. The combination and timing depend on the scan results, general health, breathing, other illnesses and medicines.

Radiotherapy directs treatment to a selected area. It may be used for the chest when local control is needed, or to relieve symptoms from a particular site. Whole-brain radiotherapy may be discussed when cancer has spread to the brain or when the specialist team considers brain treatment appropriate. These decisions are made after staging and review by a multidisciplinary team.
